Mounties on B.C.’s Sunshine Coast are appealing for information and video as they investigate suspicious fires in a subdivision that has been sitting empty for years. Fires broke out at two homes in the SeaWatch development in Sechelt on the morning of Sept. 5. “The two fires are believed to have been deliberately set. The SeaWatch area has been closed to the public since 2019 and the homes were unoccupied,” a statement from the Sunshine Coast RCMP said. “Investigators are particularly interested in any suspicious persons or vehicles seen travelling toward, entering or leaving the area.” In particular, authorities are trying to identify owner or driver of a dark green Jeep Grand Cherokee spotted in the area on the morning of the fires. The homes were ordered evacuated because of the danger posed by sinkholes. When the blazes broke out, the local fire department said first responders were unable to enter the area because of the dangerously unstable terrain—and that the homes would be allowed to burn. The RCMP urged anyone with information or video that could assist with the investigation to call 604-885-2266 and reference file SC 2026-7023.
