COLWOOD, B.C. — Donna and George Moskal are sitting on a bench hugging, kissing and acting like the teenagers they were when they first started dating. “That was a long time ago,” George laughs. “We still love each other,” Donna smiles. They met in high school when she was 16 and he was 17. “I made a really good choice when I was 17, I tell ya!” George says. Then, they both made an even better choice to get married and make a commitment they’ve kept for 66 years. “We always said we’d never go to sleep on an argument, and we never did,” George smiles. “Sometimes we were up almost all night long, but we would never go to sleep without saying we love you.” But now in their 80s, Donna and George recently faced a challenge they weren’t sure how to resolve. “It was a real nightmare, to be honest with you,” George says. They experienced a series of health challenges that forced them sell their home and wonder how they could possibly move forward together. “I felt terrible,” Donna says before grimacing in a pain, as George helped her stand-up from the bench. “I want to do (things) but I can’t.” But then Donna and George discovered the most unexpected thing they can do. “I can’t walk,” Donna says before smiling. “But I can peddle!” Now the couple travel together on a tandem trike twice a day. “We go everywhere we want to,” Donna beams. They peddle for hours, greet everyone they pass, and turn every outing into a joy ride. “We just look at the bright side of things,” George smiles as they wave and smile at every person and pet, they come across. Although they always find the brightest of the bright is right beside them. “I’m with my hubby!” Donna smiles, before squealing like a teenager. “I love trike-ing with him!” And that love can feel like rocket fuel. “I have to tell her, ‘Slow down, dear. Slow down!” George laughs. Because the older you get, the faster time flies. “Life is just so fleeting,” George says. “Enjoy the moment.” And after embarking on the ride of a lifetime, these high school sweethearts are committed to make the most of every moment and always keep their love story moving forward.
