The New Brunswick government said a fire retardant spilled on Route 11 on Wednesday. The spill happened on the northbound lanes between Jacquet River and Charlo, leaving a brightly-coloured solution on the road, according to a statement from the government. The solution, which is used to slow or stop the spread of fire, consists of ammonium polyphosphate, which is a fertilizer-type phosphate salt. “Officials are reviewing Safety Data Sheet information and analysis of any potential impacts to people, or the environment is ongoing,” the statement reads. “In the meantime, please avoid direct contact with the substance.” Officials will be at the scene and drivers are asked to proceed with caution.
