CTV News personalities got a chance to player top-tier pickleball players Wednesday in a ‘media versus the pros’ challenge. It was an opportunity to experience what it’s like to face highly skilled opposition in a sport that has exploded in popularity in Ontario and across Canada. CTV Journalist Bob Bellacicco and Meteorologist Gary Archibald teamed up and stepped onto to the court at Windsor’s Pickleplex Social Club at 1950 Lauzon Rd. Their experienced opponents – Gena Facca, co-founder and co-owner of Pickleplex Windsor, and pro tour player/pickleball instructor at Pickleplex Evan Hollinksky. For Bellacicco and Archibald – it was a valuable learning experience. The CTV colleagues got a taste of high-paced shots, sharp cutting volleys, and powerful serves from their opposition. This event helps draw attention to community facilities like Windsor’s Pickleplex and others in southern Ontario. In addition, Windsor players are making a name for themselves across the country as pro player Hollinsky – a Tecumseh native - can attest. It’s tough competition that combines athleticism, mental toughness, and strategy. “Pickleball is really interesting because it’s a game of chess,” said Hollinsky. “You never really know what your opponent is thinking on the other side. And so, you watch a lot of video review of their game to get an idea of how we’re going to approach this game and what matchups we’re going to put against their team.” Hollinsky is the head pro instructor at Pickleplex – a club that welcomes the community at large (those new to the game and advanced players) to engage in one of the fastest growing sports in Canada of the past decade.
