A compromise could create a pathway for the redevelopment of the former General Amherst High School property in Amherstburg - while preserving key pieces of its history. The school’s construction began in 1921. The following year, General Amherst H.S. welcomed its first cohort of students. A report going before Amherstburg’s heritage committee on Thursday recommends a heritage easement agreement allowing developer - Valente Development - to move forward with plans for a mixed-use project and protecting the building’s historic features. Under the proposal, 1922 and 1951 south-facing facades would be dismantled and reconstructed facing the public park, the building’s historic murals would be preserved as well. Before any work begins, a heritage alteration permit, conservation plan, and heritage impact assessment would be required. Amherstburg’s heritage committee has already listed the school as a possible site for future heritage protection.
