The Hiatus House in Windsor is celebrating a Caesars Windsor donation meant to help women escaping violence in the community. On Wednesday, Caesars Windsor Cares, a charitable arm of the casino, announced an $11,461 donation to Hiatus House for its transitional housing project — A Place to Heal. “This contribution from the people of Windsor-Essex and Caesars Windsor Cares is going toward our transitional housing project, bringing us closer to our goal of construction,” said Sylvie Guenther, the executive director of Hiatus House, in a news release. “We have been making efforts to provide this next step to women and families since 2022 and we are shovel ready.” The donation was collected through the casino’s ‘Caesars Makes Change’ program, with the charity arm matching contributions collected from guests. Hiatus House says women can face monthslong housing waits, sometimes even stretching years, after exiting emergency shelter stays as they escape abuse and violence. The new transitional housing plan aims to provide a safe, stable, and supported environment for up to two years — not the six-to-eight-week stay currently seen in shelter. “For the past year our guests have been supporting the Caesars Makes Change donation program and today, we are pleased to match their contributions to help women and their families have an opportunity for a new start,” said Jody Brown, the senior vice president and general manager of Caesars Windsor. The ‘Caesars Makes Change’ program sees guests given the option to donate slot tickets to a designated non-profit.
