A giant pumpkin tipped the scales at a new Manitoba record over the weekend, surprising fairgoers in Roland. The pumpkin, grown by Cornie Banman of the Rural Municipality of Stanley, won top honours at the annual Roland Pumpkin Fair on Saturday. It weighed 782 kilograms (1,725 pounds), making it the largest pumpkin on record in the province. Banman also held the previous record. His pumpkin weighed 1,660.5 pounds when he set the mark in 2019. Twenty pumpkins were entered in this year’s contest. Some growers took their pumpkins home, while others were trucked to Winnipeg for the Pumpkin Promise, where they will be carved and displayed to raise money for the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.
