Winnipeg to start fogging for mosquitoes as trap count numbers climb

Winnipeg is preparing to start spraying for mosquitoes.

The Superintendent of the Insect Control Branch, David Wade, said the average trap count in Winnipeg has climbed since yesterday to 84, bringing the Adulticiding Factor Analysis (AFA) to high.

Wade said the wet June has led to an increase in mosquitoes across the city.

“We had big rainfall events early in June, where we had some areas of the city receive over 100 millimetres of rain and that amount of rain in a short period of time is challenging for our larvicide program,” said Wade.

“We did an extensive larvicide program following all the rain, but when we have multiple rainfall events in a month, it makes it challenging because we get new hatches.”

The city is going to start fogging for mosquitoes Saturday at 9:30 p.m., weather permitting. A number of neighbourhoods in the southwest and southeast sides of the city have been selected for fogging to start.

It’s expected it will take around four or five nights to fog the whole city.

This is the first time the city has had to fog for mosquitoes since 2024, as Wade said there was very little precipitation in 2025, which means the program wasn’t required.

Wade added there have been complaints from residents about mosquitoes to 311 as well this year.

Winnipeggers are encouraged to do their part to reduce the chance of the mosquito population multiplying by dumping any standing water and covering any containers or pools where the water can’t be drained.
