Multiple Maritimers were celebrated at the Governor General of Canada’s ceremony of honours. Steve Murphy, a familiar face for CTV Atlantic viewers, was inducted as a “Member of the Order of Canada” at Rideau Hall on Thursday. The Governor General’s website states Murphy is “a beloved figure in Atlantic Canada and across the nation.” He was recognized for his many years hosting the CTV Atlantic 6 p.m. newscast as well as his commitment to “Christmas Daddies” – a volunteer-run charity event and Maritime tradition – and the IWK telethon. Former governor general David Johnston presided over the ceremony of honours, which began at 11 a.m. Other Maritime members inducted include Université de Moncton music professor Michel Cardin and Bernard Richard, a former New Brunswick ombudsman and child youth advocate. Molecular biologist Ford Doolittle of Halifax was also named a “Companion of the Order.” The Governor General’s office states Doolittle “fundamentally altered our understanding of the origins of life. Today’s geneticists and microbiologists continue to build on his foundational research.” “Thanks to each of your contributions, our communities are stronger, our knowledge is more advanced, and our country is more prosperous and influential on the world stage,” Johnston states of those honoured. “To you, our appointees and recipients, I offer my heartfelt congratulations.” For more Nova Scotia news, visit our dedicated provincial page
