A 28-year-old man has been charged with impaired and dangerous driving, as well as break and enter, in two occurrences that took place on the same night in Sault Ste. Marie. Police received a report around 8:40 p.m. on Oct. 28 about an erratic driver on Queen Street East. “The driver was reportedly driving the wrong direction on a one-way street at a high rate of speed,” Sault police said in a Nov. 2 news release. “Additional callers reported the vehicle driving into oncoming traffic on Great Northern Road and failing to yield to a pedestrian at a crosswalk.” The suspect vehicle was found in a parking lot on Great Northern Road. Arrested twice in one night “Upon speaking with the driver, officers developed grounds to believe their ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol and/or drugs,” police said. “They were arrested.” While registering below the legal limit for alcohol in the bloodstream, a drug recognition expert concluded the man was impaired by drugs. The suspect, who is from Searchmont, was charged with impaired driving offences, dangerous driving, driving the wrong way on a one-way street, failing to yield to a pedestrian and being a novice driver with a blood alcohol concentration above zero. He was released with a court date of Nov. 30. But at 10 p.m., police received a report about a break-and-enter on Killarney Road. “When officers conducted a door knock, a person ran out of the residence,” police said. “Officers caught up with the suspect, who was identified as the accused. They were arrested. Further investigation revealed the accused had damaged property to break into the residence.” He was charged with break-and-enter and mischief under $5,000. The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 18.
