With rising prices, many Atlantic Canadians are looking for low-cost ways to keep their home warm this winter. Shane Murphy with Efficiency Nova Scotia says the biggest thing homeowners should focus on is keeping heat in. “Especially here in Atlantic Canada where homes are older and they might not have been built with a lot of insulation,” he told CTV Your Morning Atlantic’s Crystal Garrett. “So looking at gaps around windows, doors and attic spaces where energy or warm air escapes and cold air comes in. It is really important to seal those up.” Murphy recommends homeowners try the candle test in their homes. “So you take a candle and walk it around windows and doors. If your flame flickers, then there is a draft.” For homes with electric heating, Murphy says people should think about using a smart thermostat. “They can change your temperature automatically based on your routine. So if you are at work, it will automatically lower the temperature and save you money on your bill.” If your home has a heat pump, Murphy says it very important to keep it clean. “Ensure your filters are clean because if they start to gather dust then they won’t be running as efficient as possible and saving you as much money.” Murphy recommends every homeowner to get a home energy assessment. “A team of professionals come by and take a measurement of your home’s energy and gives you a recommendation of the things you can do,” he says. “It’s a perfect way to start because many homeowners don’t know where to begin.” For more Nova Scotia news, visit our dedicated provincial page
