A local hockey player who was accused in a historical sexual assault is skating his way back to the NHL. Barrie’s Alex Formenton has been signed to a one-year, $850,000 contract with the Edmonton Oilers. Formenton was one of five 2018 World Junior hockey team players accused in a lengthy, high profile sexual assault, who were all acquitted. The two-month trial, which gained international attention, took place in London, Ont. last June. While the players were suspended by Hockey Canada for breaching its code of conduct, Formenton was reinstated in August. The forward made his NHL debut for the Ottawa Senators in 2017-18 and hasn’t played in the league since the 2021-22 season. He’s had 33 goals, 19 assists for 52 points over the course of 88 games.
