The federal government is investing in the RCMP Heritage Centre through the Build Communities Strong Fund. An amount of more than $7.7 million was announced by the Honourable Buckley Belanger, secretary of state for Rural Development. The funding is the largest into the centre since its 2007 capital campaign. The money will be used to upgrade building systems, modernize exhibits, improve accessibility, and preserve Canadian history for people visiting Regina for generations to come. RCMP Heritage Centre CEO Sam Karikas says the level of funding is “unprecedented” and hopes that the project will be a stepping stone on the way to becoming a national museum. “It’s something we have been working on for about six years. And it’s something the government has been investing in,” she said Becoming a national museum is an honour only nine places have been designated. “Once established we would be only the third Museum established outside of the National Capital region in Ottawa-Gatineau,” Karikas explained. “So a really big deal for us in the west to have that representation and to have that Canadian story told across the country.” The centre has been attempting to gain national status since budget 2021. This investment and the improvements to the building and visitor experience will hopefully be a large boost to that mission.
