Three local communities are part of a larger group that is receiving funding from the federal government to help mitigate climate risks. On Wednesday, Julie Dabrusin, federal minister of environment, climate change, and nature, announced 141 “climate resilience” projects are underway across 128 communities in Canada. The $34.2 million in funding from these projects comes through the government’s Green Municipal Fund’s Local Leadership for Climate Adaptation Initiative. “Our government is investing to make these communities more resilient so that people are protected from flooding, extreme heat and other risks,” Dabrusin said. “Building that resilience now is how we keep Canadians safe and keep life affordable for the long term,” said Dabrusin. Among the 128 communities are Dufferin County, Georgian Bay and York region. Dufferin County is set to receive $105,000 for general climate change preparedness. Georgian Bay will receive $70,000 for incorporating indigenous knowledge in future climate change adaptation planning. York Region, in collaboration with the Canadian Water Network, will receive $46,000 for the implementation of its climate change adaptation plan.
