Over the past week, there have been three different instances of moose sightings in the region, but why are they here? As it turns out, moose will travel far and wide to search for that special someone. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) tells CTV News due to fall breeding season, bull moose will travel far in search of mates. The MNR says that can bring them into communities and other developed areas. “The recent increase in moose sightings in Simcoe County is not unusual for this time of year,” the MNR says. Moose tend to go outside their normal range when searching for a mate, according to the MNR. Residents and visitors in Victoria Harbour spotted a moose on the loose last week and over the weekend. Then on Wednesday, another moose was seen in Collingwood and the OPP and MNR worked together to relocate the moose to a more suitable location. While moose can be seen in north Simcoe County and further north, it’s uncommon to see them in Collingwood and the surrounding area, according to the MNR. According to Randy Bidan with Huronia Animal Control, he seems to think the Victoria Harbour moose made its way to Midland by Thursday, which caught the attention of many passersby. The MNR along with Huronia Animal Control managed to capture the moose and relocate it further north. Bidan describes that moose as a bull moose, estimated around 600 pounds. To capture the animal, Huronia Animal Control staff asked the public to give the moose space, the MNR tranquilized the moose to prevent it from bolting and a few minutes later it started snoring. It was then loaded into a trailer to head on its way back home.
