An investigation is underway after someone in an SUV attempted to conduct a traffic stop while impersonating an officer near Lancer, Sask. Leader RCMP received a report that an SUV with blue and red flashing lights attempted to conduct a traffic stop around 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday, according to a release from Saskatchewan RCMP on Thursday. Police determined a truck pulled over onto the shoulder of Highway 32 after observing the emergency lights from the SUV behind them. Police say the SUV with lights stopped behind the truck but no one inside the SUV approached the truck. According to RCMP, the truck drove away, with the driver never encountering anyone from the SUV, which was described to police as red with silver rims. Leader RCMP confirmed the SUV was not connected to any policing agencies in the area. Officers obtained surveillance footage of the SUV driving in Abbey, Sask., prior to its interaction with the truck near Lancer. Investigation into the incident is continuing. RCMP say they have not located the SUV yet. RCMP reminded the public that it is against the law to impersonate police. If someone encounters the SUV or thinks they’re being followed by an imitation police vehicle, they are asked to contact RCMP. They can also submit anonymous tips to Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers. RCMP say the public is allowed to request ID from RCMP officers and can request to see an officer’s badge if they have concerns during a police vehicle stop. The badge and ID card will show the same regimental number, with the ID card showing a photo. If there are further concerns, the public can call the RCMP to verify the identity of the officer or person involved. Lancer, Sask. is located about 259 kilometres southwest of Saskatoon and about 347 kilometres west of Regina.
