The weather never seems to cooperate for the Peloton Glencoe Invitational golf tournament, but the golfers playing in it won’t let that dampen their spirits. The 30th edition of the tournament kicked off Thursday and continues through Saturday in Calgary. Last year, Hunter Thomson had it all working at the Glencoe Invitational. The 22-year-old won the men’s pro division and returning as the defending chap is something special for the Calgarian. “It’s really cool,” Thompson told CTV News Thursday. “You know, driving down that road this morning and seeing my picture being the first one up there is pretty cool. “When I was growing up in Calgary, I always saw this event as a big deal and to be the defending champion this year is an honour really.“’ Thomson says this year has been a bit of a struggle. He’s hoping being back in familiar territory will give him the spark he’s been looking for. “I know this course really well,” he said. “I’ve played it hundreds of times, so you know if I can find something soon, I wouldn’t be surprised if I do this week. This is the best field they’ve ever had for the invitational. Quebec’s Joey Savoie won an American tour event in Equador in late May. And then made the cut last weekend at the RBC Canadian Open. “Making a cut at this level for me the first time, you know I think I might’ve been the first Quebec guy to do it in like 30 years,” Savoie said. “Pretty much the same as a Canadian team hasn’t won the Stanley Cup, it’s been a while you know, it was a good accomplishment and I hope to build on it for the rest of the season.” It’s an all-Canadian field at this year’s Glencoe Invitational. Eight provinces will be represented. Josee Doyon won the women’s professional event in 2024. It will always be a special tournament for her. “Yeah, I’m just so happy that I have the opportunity to come back and choose this event,” Doyon said. “Because sometimes the womens’ event is (the) other tournament. I picked this one because now you’re a defending champion and you want to battle for your title and it’s fun to be back here.” The event continues through Saturday at the Glencoe Golf and Country Club.
