A late-night crash on Stoney Trail in southwest Calgary has killed at least one child, emergency responders say. Calgary police say emergency crews were called to the scene of a three-vehicle crash on Stoney Trail, near the exit to Tsuut’ina Parkway, at about 11 p.m. on Sunday. They say a 30-year-old man driving a Mercedes Benz south in the northbound lanes of the road collided with a Subaru Impreza and Chevrolet Equinox driving north. Emergency crews arrived on scene to the Mercedes and Subaru fully engulfed in flames. Fire crews immediately started fighting the fires while searching the involved vehicles for people. They provided emergency care to those who could be reached, a news release from the Calgary Fire Department said. Once the fire was brought under control, firefighters worked with Alberta Emergency Health Services to treat those involved. Calgary police say the man driving the Mercedes, as well as a woman and child also in the car, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Subaru was also pronounced deceased. The driver and three youth passengers in the Chevrolet were taken to hospital. Police say one occupant suffered life-altering but non-life-threatening injuries. CPS Traffic Unit Staff Sgt. Andy Woodward told reporters at a news conference Monday that police had received a call about a “white or silver” vehicle travelling south in the northbound lanes of Stoney Trail. He confirmed one of the vehicles in the crash was silver. “Trying to get ahead of it is very, very difficult,” he said when asked if police could have prevented the crash. “You would have to have a police vehicle in the right location at the right time and that just didn’t happen.” The crash happened about two minutes after the report came in, he said. Calgary police are investigating the crash. They say impairment and excessive speed on behalf of the Mercedes driver is being considered as a factor in the collision. The roadway was closed for several hours but reopened at around 9:45 a.m. Monday.
