Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating after a woman was shot by a Winnipeg Police Service officer Monday morning. According to a news release from Winnipeg police, an officer was in the area of Aikins Street and College Avenue when he heard the sound of gunshots nearby. When he arrived at the scene, he was allegedly confronted by an 18-year-old woman and a 16-year-old youth. “A use of force encounter occurred, a police service firearm was discharged, and the woman was injured,” police wrote in a news release. “Emergency medical care was immediately provided to the 18-year-old woman, and she was transported to hospital in unstable condition, later upgraded to stable condition.” Winnipeg police say the woman and youth were linked to a shooting that occurred outside a home in the 300 block of College Avenue at the same time. The youth was arrested. Police said they recovered a firearm from the suspects at the scene. The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is now investigating the officer-involved shooting.
