A shelter-in-place advisory gripped Mississauga First Nation for much of the day on Sunday was lifted late afternoon. Ontario Provincial Police issued the initial public-safety alert at about 7:35 a.m. on Aug. 2, urging residents in the area of West Street and Park Road to remain indoors as officers were responding to a disturbance involving a potentially armed individual. “OPP is taking every precaution necessary to resolve this situation,” police said in its morning statement. “We ask all residents to take actions to protect their safety while police work to apprehend the individual.” At the time, residents were told to lock doors and windows, close curtains and call 911 if they encountered anyone suspicious. Motorists in and around the area of the First Nation community were directed to proceed directly to their destinations without unnecessary stops and were warned not to pick up hitchhikers while those outside the affected area were asked to avoid travelling there. “People can expect an increased police presence as officers continue their investigation,” OPP said in a news release. Shelter-in-place ends The emergency measure remained in effect until shortly before 4 p.m., when OPP confirmed the shelter-in-place had been lifted. Police also stated there was no longer any threat to public safety. In an update released at that time, officers revealed they had responded to a report of gunshots near a residence in the West Street and Park Road area Sunday morning. “Upon police arrival, one individual was located with life-threatening injuries,” the OPP said. Ongoing investigation OPP said the investigation is continuing, with assistance from various teams including the canine unit. “A heavy police presence may remain as the on-site investigation continues,” police said. “OPP recognizes the emotional impact that receiving a shelter-in-place advisory can cause and appreciated the public’s patience and understanding as officers worked to investigate and resolve the situation.” No further details about the injured individual or the circumstances of the gunshot report have been released by police. OPP also have not reported any arrests in connection with the incident. “No further information will be released at this time,” said OPP.
