40-year-old Calgary man charged in 16-year-old girl’s overdose death

Police have charged a man in his 40s with manslaughter connected to the overdose death of a 16-year-old girl.

Calgary police have laid a manslaughter charge in connection with a drug overdose death, saying it’s the first time the service has ever done so.

The 16-year-old victim died last winter.

Police say Jordynn Atkins‑Mater and a 16-year-old friend met with the accused — 40-year-old Steve Phillip Gilbert Collins — downtown on Nov. 27, 2025.

Collins was “an acquaintance” of the teens, police said.

Later, they went back to his home in the 8300 block of Centre Street N.E., at which time police believe they consumed drugs.

It’s alleged the accused found the victim unconscious the following morning and called 911.

Paramedics rushed to the home but were unable to revive the girl.

An autopsy determined Atkins‑Mater died from the toxic effects of carfentanil.

“Following an investigation by the Calgary Police Service drug investigations for safer communities team, and with Crown prosecutor consultation, it was determined charges were warranted,” police said Friday.

Steve Phillip Gilbert Collins was taken into custody on Thursday.

He is scheduled to appear in court next on July 6.

An obituary describes Atkins-Materi as a beautiful, bright, creative and loving young woman.

“She loved writing, painting, and creating, and had a special affection for babies, whether real or her cherished dolls. Jordynn showed courage and determination in making positive changes in her life, and her kind heart touched everyone who knew her,” it says.

“This is a heartbreaking loss, and we extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family,” said Staff Sgt, Sean Gregson.

“Illicit drugs continue to have a devastating impact, particularly on vulnerable individuals in our community.

“What we are trying to do is make an impact here, and hold those people responsible ”
