The sister of the Montreal police officer killed in the line of duty in this week’s shooting is calling on people to stop sharing videos online of his final moments. Lina Benredouane broke her silence in a Facebook post on Friday, pleading with people to report videos showing her brother’s killing. Officer Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34, was killed responding to a report of a gunman in Côte-des-Neiges on Monday morning. A civilian, 68-year-old Michael Mizrahi, and the alleged shooter, 25-year-old Seth Hatfield, were also killed in the shooting. “As well as his family, Mohamed left behind a pregnant wife and a three-year-old son. I wouldn’t want my nephews to come across these videos in five or ten years’ time, showing how their father was brutally shot dead,” the police officer’s sister wrote in the post. “Out of respect for his memory, for his family and for his children, please help to have these videos taken down.” Montreal police have also urged people not to share graphic videos of the deadly shooting out of respect for the victims’ families. Lamine Benredouane had been an officer with the Montreal police service since 2021. “His death is a great loss for our organization. His sense of duty, his dedication, and his professionalism will remain forever in our memories,” the police said in a statement the night of the shooting. On Thursday, Montreal police confirmed they will hold a civic funeral for Lamine Benredouane in the near future. A date has not yet been announced. He was laid to rest at a private ceremony in Laval on Wednesday following a ceremony at the Islamic Centre of Quebec in Montreal. Mourners also gathered Wednesday to pay tribute to Mizrahi, who is said to have spent his final moments warning others to flee danger during the shooting. Police say Hatfield came from his hometown in Alberta before the shooting and left a manifesto in a hotel room near the shooting that expressed hatred toward women and calls for violence. A motive for the shooting has not been disclosed by police. Provincial police are investigating the shooting, as are investigators with Quebec’s police watchdog. The RCMP has also opened a national security investigation into ideologically motivated violent extremism.
