Owner arrested after confronting suspect who allegedly broke window

Police in Timmins say a confrontation between a business owner and a suspect who allegedly damaged a window escalated into an assault that sent one person to hospital.

Police said officers responded to a report of mischief at about 10:55 a.m. on Friday, after an individual allegedly damaged a window at a local business before leaving the area on foot.

According to police, the business owner pursued the suspect and confronted them a short distance away.

“During the confrontation, a weapon was used, resulting in injuries to the suspected mischief offender,” the Timmins Police Service said in a news release on June 26.

The injured individual was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

One arrested

As a result of the investigation, one individual was arrested in connection with the assault.

“The investigation remains ongoing and additional details, including charges, will be released as they become available where appropriate,” police said.

Police urge caution

The police used the incident to remind the public that while it is understandable to feel frustrated when witnessing a crime or being a victim to a crime, personal safety should always be the priority.

“If you witness a crime in progress or are a victim to a crime, do not attempt to pursue or confront the individual involved,” said police.

“Instead, move to a safe location, observe from a distance if it is safe to do so, and contact police immediately.”

The police service said prompt reporting allows officers to respond appropriately while reducing the risk of injury to those involved.
