Calgary man charged in stabbing outside Pacific Place Mall

Calgary police have laid charges in a weekend stabbing at Pacific Place Mall that left the victim in life-threatening condition.

The stabbing happened outside the mall, located at 999 36 St. N.E., at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.

“It is believed that two men were involved in a physical altercation, which resulted in one man obtaining a knife from his vehicle and returning to stab the second man multiple times,” police said in a Tuesday news release.

The victim, a man in his 50s, remains in hospital in critical but stable condition.

Police say a suspect was arrested at the scene.

“The men are known to each other, and investigators believe the altercation was the result of an ongoing dispute,” police said.

Long Thanh Tran, 45, of Calgary, is charged with one count each of aggravated assault and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

Police say when the stabbing occurred, the area was packed with people, and it’s believed several witnesses haven’t yet spoken with investigators.

“Although we have laid charges in this case, we are still looking to piece together the events that let up to this altercation,” said Staff Sgt. Keith Shufelt. “We are continuing to collect witness accounts and video evidence to confirm timelines and understand how the situation escalated.”
