2026 municipal tax bylaw passes, 6.9% tax levy confirmed

Edmonton city council passed the 2026 tax bylaw Tuesday, finalizing municipal tax rates after confirming a 6.9 per cent tax levy increase earlier this month.

The tax increase will impact property owners differently depending on how their property is assessed. The city says a homeowner will pay about $774 in municipal taxes this year for every $100,000 assessed in home value, an increase of $53 from last year.

A typical single detached home assessed at $492,500 will pay about $318 a month in property taxes for 2026.

The city determines tax rates by dividing the amount of money needed by the total value of all properties.

Education property taxes are collected by the city on behalf of the Alberta government. Education taxes increased by 10.2 per cent this year for residential properties and 2.6 per cent for non-residential properties.

The provincial education portion of property taxes accounts for about 25 per cent of the combined property tax bill for a typical single detached home in Edmonton.

Residential tax bills will be sent on May 35 with payment due June 30.

The city says 2026 property taxes will generate more than $2.5 billion to help fund services like parks, trails, roads, emergency services, bridges, transit, recreation centres and more.
