Calgary weather: Foggy start on Thursday with thunderstorms possible later in the day

Thunderstorms expected in Calgary on Thursday. Jodi Hughes has a look at the five-day forecast from the Sky Watch Weather Centre.

A yellow-level fog advisory was issued Thursday morning for the City of Calgary and communities south and east – including along the Trans-Canada Highway.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) explained there were areas with near-zero visibility, and “Travel will likely be hazardous in some locations. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic.”

The fog advisories were lifted just after 8:15 a.m. Thursday.

Any lingering fog is expected to mix out throughout the morning and likely redevelop overnight and impact commuters again Friday morning.

A low-pressure system that is currently situated in the east Pacific basin will track through southern B.C. with the exit region cutting into southwestern Alberta.

The rest of Thursday will include a mix of sun and cloud with a chance of scattered showers and/or thunderstorms across central and southern Alberta later in the day – including in Calgary.

If thunderstorms do develop, the cells should lack the organization and the energy to become severe in nature.

A shortwave disturbance will set up along the QEII corridor near Red Deer on Friday afternoon before tracking north and east.

This system is likely to contain more energy and precipitation and has the potential to produce moderate to severe thunderstorms, especially around the capital region.

A trailing cold front could bring some rain into the Calgary area Friday and again on Saturday, but the most likely day for heavier accumulations in Calgary is on Sunday.

Temperatures will sit around seasonal values for most of the next week and a half, with the coolest daytime highs forecast for this weekend.
