It’s beginning to look and feel a lot like Christmas in Calgary. It might come as a surprise that Calgary did experience an above-seasonal high of 1 C on Friday—it just happened to be around 5 a.m., when most people were still asleep! Throughout the day, a dense blanket of freezing fog enveloped the city, creating reduced visibility and deteriorating conditions on the roads. This triggered a yellow-level fog advisory for Calgary and surrounding communities that was expected to be lifted later Friday. Expect periods of light snow throughout Friday evening and early Saturday morning before the flakes taper off around 6 a.m. The rest of Saturday is looking cold and grey with cloudy conditions and a high of just -9 C that will feel more like -18 with the wind chill. We’ll get a bit of a reprieve on Sunday and Monday when the jet stream readjusts into a ridge of high pressure that will allow more sunshine to work its way back into the forecast. On Monday, temperatures will rally back into the positives, thanks to a chinook setup that will usher in strong westerly winds at 30 to 50 km/h. The long-range forecast has a lot of ups and downs, with our next possible dose of messy winter weather returning as early as Wednesday evening.
