One hundred-and-eighty cyclists hit the pavement on the weekend in the Calgary women’s Gran Fondo race. Seventy-kilometre and 40-kilometre rides began at the Rocky Ridge YMCA early Sunday morning. Organizers say it’s the only women’s Gran Fondo mass race of its kind in Canada. “What makes this event really special is that it’s all for women,” said organizer Richelle Love. “There’s often a lot of barriers and intimidation for women, and we’ve made this event so accessible that women feel like they can comfortably come out, ride with friends, and complete the route.” Several types of bikes were permitted, ranging from road and mountain bikes, to e-bikes. All levels of cyclists, from beginners to experienced riders, were welcome. Organizers hope the event will grow in future years, and encourage more women to get on bikes.
