One man is seriously injured after being shot by a police officer at a northwest Calgary LRT station. Police say the officer-involved shooting happened at Dalhousie station around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. According to Chief Katie McLellan, bylaw officers alerted police to a man acting erratically and carrying a knife. He was shot on the crosswalk near the entrance of the station and taken to hospital with serious injuries. “Our members acted swiftly to protect the public in this very dangerous situation,” McLellan said. No officers or bystanders were hurt. Mereia Chehade uses the Dalhouse station every day and was saddened to hear about the shooting. “Honestly, it is pretty shocking, especially for this station because I have no issues ever,” said Chehade. “I’ve always felt this is probably the safest station. “I think I would have expected it more, like, in the south—to hear it happen here is kind of insane.” The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called in to investigate, which the chief said limits the details she can provide on the shooting at this time. “While I cannot speak to the specifics in this case, we know our officers are regularly faced with incidents that are unpredictable and can escalate very quickly,” she said. “Our members are well-trained to deal with situations like these, and 99 per cent of the time, they are resolved peacefully.” Dalhousie station was closed for a time after the incident. Calgary Transit said shuttle buses were in place between Dalhousie and Brentwood stations. Police started to clear out around 5 p.m. “This is one of the busier LRT stations, with the mall being close by, so there are several people out who actually witnessed the incident happen,” said Supt. Joe Brar. ASIRT, the province’s police watchdog, is called in to investigate whenever officers’ actions might have resulted in “serious injury or death,” or in the event “serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct” are made.
