As outdoor market season winds down, farmers are reflecting on their crop yields after the Edmonton region saw record-breaking rainfall. This year we weren’t even scratching the field until the end of April/beginning of May,” said Shane Erdmann at the Callingwood Farmers’ Market on Sunday. “Generally, a lot of our earlier stuff that we would try to start seeding in the middle of April was just set back to the beginning of May.” Founded in 1983, the family-owned Erdmann’s Garden and Greenhouses is located north of Bon Accord. The farm grows fresh field vegetables and operates more than 12,000 square feet of greenhouse space. Erdmann said the quantity and quality of product were impacted by the heavy rainfall. Mark Dowhaniuk, assistant manager of the Callingwood Farmers’ Market, said vendors have had a hit-or-miss season. “It has been a trying season. I know the vendors here have been pretty lucky with their crops… Some are a little bit later than usual… there are definitely some local farms that did take it a little bit harder,” said Dowhaniuk.
