Parts of southern Saskatchewan are expected to receive heavy snowfall beginning Sunday and lasting through Thanksgiving. Southwestern Saskatchewan is expected to receive between 10 and 20 centimetres of wet snow Sunday night before it tapers off Monday afternoon, according to SaskAlert. Visibility may also be lowered at times, according to the alert. “Another low-pressure system is developing in Montana and will spread a band of heavier snow into southwestern Saskatchewan,” the alert read. “Latest indications continue to intensify this system, increasing the amount of snow forecast for the warned area.” The affected areas include communities in the Cypress Hills, Grasslands National Park as well as surrounding communities. “A passing cold front will bring northerly winds and snowfall to the higher terrain of the Cypress Hills today. Local accumulations of up to 5 cm are possible there. The bulk of the snow moves in this evening for elsewhere in the southwest,” read the alert. “... Final snowfall amounts will be variable due to melting but broadly 10 to 20 cm of heavier, wet snow is anticipated.” The alert encouraged people to prepare for quickly changing travel conditions; take frequent breaks to avoid strain while clearing snow; prepare for possible disruptions to transportation, services and utilities; and to protect themselves by staying in a vehicle if they get stranded.
