Parts of Elk Island National Park reopen after flooding forces closures

The Bison Loop road at Elk Island National Park reopened for vehicles only while most of the park remains closed for storm damage cleanup.

Elk Island National Park is slowly reopening after closures earlier this month caused by multiple heavy storms.

As of Friday, visitors are able to access the following areas:

• Wahkotowin information centre,
• Elk Island Parkway,
• Astotin Lake Campground and group camping area,
• Oster Lake Backcountry Campground,
• Astotin Lake and Tawayik Lake day use areas; and
• Astotin Theatre.

Bison Loop Road was opened earlier this week for visitors to view wildlife during the bison rut.

The rest of the park remains closed as of Friday as clean up continues.

“Every effort is being made to re-open the park trails to visitors as soon as possible,” a media release said.

Park officials suggest the Beaver Hills Biosphere for avid hikers.
