Ontario’s police watchdog has invoked its mandate after a police officer shot and killed a man in Brockville, Ont. on Thursday. According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), OPP officers were called to a home near King Street West and Broad Street at around 7:45 p.m. to execute a warrant. Officers encountered a 28-year-old man at the home. “There was an interaction, and one officer discharged his firearm. The man was struck,” the SIU said. “The man was transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.” The man has not been identified. According to the OPP, officers with the East Region Tactics and Rescue Unit were assisting the Brockville Police Service in the execution of a search warrant at the home. Brockville police had advised residents via social media to avoid the King Street West and Broad Street area Thursday night. The OPP notified the SIU, which invoked its mandate. No other details were provided. The SIU says four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. A post-mortem is scheduled for Saturday morning in Kingston.
