The Navan Fair is kicking off, which means its officially fair season in eastern Ontario. The community event highlights local agriculture, family fun and local vendors. After the midway opened on Friday, there were line-ups for ice cream and animals got ready for their big debut in competitions. “Enjoying the weather and the rides along with the games,” said Patrick Mullington, who was attending the fair. People travelled from all over eastern Ontario to take part in the cattle shows and competitions. Jess Young won Grand Champion calf and posed with her six-month old calf after the competition. “It means I had the best calf here exhibited at Navan Fair and it was pretty fierce because we had a lot of good calves out today,” Young said. Young says she’s been training since April and it’s been a proud moment to savour. The Navan Fair runs until Aug. 9 with a theme of where country and city meet. Organizers say there’s a full itinerary all weekend. “We’re really looking forward to welcoming some of our urban and suburban neighbours who haven’t really had an opportunity to come out before and to come kind of learn where your food comes from and take in everything that the fair has to offer,” said Tracey Hayes, the director of advertising and media at the Navan Fair. The event also features an animal petting farm, demolition derby and live music. “I’m looking forward to the shows tonight with Signal Hill and opening up for Signal Hill tonight is the Derringers with DW James,” Hayes said. Saturday’s itinerary includes the fair breakfast, the parade, heavy horse harness classes and a new zucchini 500 car race.
