A Canadian company, already famous for creating real prototypes of fantastical objects, is getting renewed attention thanks to Time. The publication recently put together a list of “The Best Inventions of 2026,” and the Smith Blade from Hacksmith Industries was given a special mention. In December 2025, CTV News visited the company’s headquarters in Cambridge, Ont. to check out the device. The Smith Blade has been described as a 21st-century take on the pocketknife. Time called it a “modern multitool.” “The Smith Blade contains 21 everyday utility tools – including a knife and a 4mm precision screwdriver system – in one compact, ultra-light titanium package,” the publication said. While Smith Blade didn’t make the main list, it was recognized as one of the inventions “making the world better, smarter and more fun.” To produce the Smith Blade, Hacksmith Industries raised $15 million over a three-week period in August 2025. It was one of the most successful Canadian Kickstarters of all time. The company is also no stranger to tricked out tech. Hacksmith Industries has previously recreated Captain America’s shield, a Star Wars lightsaber which burned at 2,200 degrees Celsius, Batman’s Batcave and a Mentos Fizzooka, inspired by the Fortnite video game.
