Wilmot Fire is mourning the death of its chief fire prevention officer and Station 3 assistant district chief, Andrew Mechalko, who died Oct. 9 following a battle with occupational cancer. In a statement posted on Facebook, the department said Mechalko dedicated himself to serving others, protecting the community and mentoring fellow firefighters during his time with the department. He joined Wilmot Fire in 2005 and was remembered for his commitment, kindness and dedication to the fire service. “Andrew’s passing leaves a tremendous void within our fire family,” the department said. The department extended its condolences to Mechalko’s family, friends and colleagues as they grieve his loss and celebrate his life of service. “Rest easy, Andrew. Thank you for everything. We’ll take it from here,” Wilmot Fire said.
