Youth taken to hospital after Woolwich fire

A 16-year-old employee of a woodworking company was taken to hospital after a fire in Woolwich. CTV’s Heather Senoran reports.

A young person has been taken to hospital after a fire in Woolwich.

Emergency services were called to an industrial woodworking business on Arthur Street North near Sandy Hills Drive around 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Woolwich Fire Department Deputy Chief Jeff Lipskie said the fire began after employees heard a large bang in one of the machines.

“Early indications state that this was a dust explosion that started within the wood working facility of the industrial occupancy here,” he said. “We can’t fully confirm that until we do a full investigation with the Fire Marshal’s Office.”

A 16-year-old employee was taken to hospital with minor injuries and has since been released.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and the damage estimate comes in at $300,000.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service said the Office of the Fire Marshal has been called. The Ministry of Labour was also on site.
