Wind warnings now active across southern Sask. as spring storm closes in

In the wake of a special weather advisory, much of Saskatchewan’s southern half is now under various wind warnings – as an intense low-pressure system is expected to roll into the region Thursday.

According to an Environment Canada alert issued Wednesday, widespread westerly winds of 70 kilometres per hour are expected, with gusts as high 110 km/h.

The winds are expected to start howling at daybreak Thursday and last until Thursday evening.

Environment Canada says the winds are likely to cause “very difficult” driving conditions and bring a high chance of utility outages.

“High-sided vehicles could be overturned by the wind,” the alert read. “Damage to some critical infrastructure is possible.”

The warnings were issued for much of southern Saskatchewan – extending from Macklin in the northwest to Estevan in the southeast.

Environment Canada advises people to secure any loose objects and to protect themselves from flying or falling debris if they find themselves outside.

Communities such as Regina, Weyburn Swift Current, Fort Qu’Appelle, Leader, Carnduff and Maple Creek are among those likely to be affected.

“A strong low-pressure system will develop over the next day in the prairies, and will sit near Saskatoon by Thursday afternoon,” Environment Canada added.

“South of this low, very strong westerly winds are expected for most of the day. In addition to strong winds, drier areas may see restricted visibilities in blowing dust.”

At 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Environment Canada also issued a rainfall warning for a large swath of northern Saskatchewan – including Stanley Mission, Montreal Lake, Meadow Lake and Île-à-la-Crosse.
