As the Crown’s case got underway at the second degree murder trial of Zachary McDermott on Tuesday two Agreed Statement of Facts were read to the jury. In one it stated, “On Sept. 12, 2018 Zachary McDermott fatally shot Christopher Clements-Card in the parking lot of Tim Hortons at 2094 Dundas Street... it is admitted that the accused before the court shot the deceased.” After that the Crown proceeded to show surveillance camera footage from various nearby locations. London police Det.-Sgt. Jon Pain testified that in one you can see the accused pull up to where Clements-Card’s girlfriend lives off of Bonaventure Drive in East London. Then minutes later the victim is seen showing up to the same location and he is seen to be visibly upset with the woman, with the officer saying, “You see Mr. Clements-Card smashing something to the ground...it did not seem positive.” Then cameras track Clements-Card, 21, leaving the area and going to a nearby coffee shop with his brother. Moments later a car identified as the same Silver Chevy driven by McDermott, 26, pulls up and goes towards the victim. Within seconds the car is seen taking off down Dundas Street. Emergency crew rush to the scene and Clements-Card is taken to hospital where he would be pronounced dead after suffering two gunshot wounds to the back. McDermott who was 18 years old at the time would be arrested days later on Sept. 21, 2018 and he has plead not guilty to second degree murder. The trial and the Crown’s case resumes on Thursday.
