If you saw a big police presence in Meaford recently, police have confirmed it was a swatting incident. A swatting incident is the investigation of a fake emergency call. On Thursday just before 6 p.m., Grey Bruce OPP received a call from a support service, saying an individual reported someone in their home was in crisis. The helpline worker said they heard what sounded like gunshots in the background. Police responded immediately to the home on Denmark Street between Edwin Street and Margaret Street. Officers contained the area and more cops were sent to keep the surrounding community safe. A notification was issued to let residents know via social media. The investigation was ruled unfounded. By 7 p.m., OPP confirmed it was a swatting call and cleared the area. “These incidents are treated seriously, due to the risks they create for the public, emergency responders, and the individuals at the targeted location,” police said in a news release. “Once a false emergency call is placed, emergency resources responding to that incident are unavailable to assist with legitimate emergencies elsewhere in the community.” Police remind that making a false emergency call is a criminal offence.
