It’s being called a ‘rare find.’ The former Sandwich Town Canada Post Office on Sandwich Street is listed on the market for lease. The listing went up earlier this month by Pinnacle Plus Realty Ltd. Other than being a post office, the site has also been used as a cafe and, most recently, the home of the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority. Ward 2 Coun. Frazier Fathers represents the area and feels the site is a great opportunity for an entrepreneur or a business. “This is sort of the iconic building of Sandwich Town other than McKenzie Hall, and my understanding is that the bridge authority’s lease is sort of up at the end of the year, and I presume that because it’s been listed, they are choosing not to renew that lease or move somewhere else, and so this is an exciting opportunity for Sandwich Town and the BIA,” he says. Fathers says the Sandwich Town BIA is currently working on refurbishing the fountain in front of the building. “We really see this as a potential anchor tenant for the BIA, whether that be a new coffee shop, some sort of restaurant or cafe, or other business,” says Fathers. Fathers added, he has not spoken with the owner of the building but knows the Sandwich Town BIA has been in touch. “The BIA has been very interested and has had ongoing conversations with the building owner around what could go there and what the BIA would love to see,” he says. The listing says the building includes main floor commercial space with a full basement. The listing also says the building is completely renovated. The building includes a new high-efficiency boiler system for heating & hot water, central air conditioning, a fire panel, a sprinkler system, plumbing, wiring, vinyl windows, and fresh paint. Based on the listing, the rate of the lease is $3,900 per month. The WDBA provided a statement to AM800 News that says, “After seven years in the former post office building on Sandwich Street, Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority’s (WDBA) lease is scheduled to expire on November 30, 2026. The Community Office opened on August 21, 2019, to provide a local presence and direct point of contact for hundreds of residents, businesses, and stakeholders during the construction phase of the Gordie Howe International Bridge. With the bridge now open, WDBA will conclude its occupancy of the Sandwich Street location when the lease expires. While the physical office will close, WDBA remains committed to engaging with the community and responding to questions.
