The 18-year-old accused of the murder of Ontario Provincial Police Const. Tarun Bali in Hearst, Ont., appeared in court via video on Wednesday. Justin Veronneau, 18, has been charged with first-degree murder in Bali’s death, which took place June 9. He’s also charged with assaulting a police officer, dangerous driving, resisting arrest and flight from police. Defence lawyer Sharon Sabourin said they are still going through disclosure from the Crown and asked that the matter return Sept. 9. Sabourin also said that, despite repeated requests, Veronneau has not received medication he needs while in jail. Hasn’t received his medication “It’s incumbent on me to make some comments on the record with respect to Mr. Veronneau not receiving his prescribed medication,” she said. “It continues to be a problem that Mr. Veronneau is not getting proper medical care. And so, I’m going to make that request again here on the record, your honour, and we’ll continue to follow up with the institution to the extent that I have any influence in trying to make that happen.” Bali’s death took place when he was trying to stop a fleeing suspect and was hit by a car. The incident happened on Kendall Concession Road 7 near Concession Road 6 in Hearst. In the days following the tragedy, OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique said Veronneau had fled from a hospital where he was being assessed under the authority of the Mental Health Act when Bali was killed. Sabourin said they hope to set a date for a judicial pretrial at the Sept. 9 hearing, which begins at 10 a.m.
