The province and Webequie First Nation have named the construction manager for the Webequie Supply Road project, which will allow access to the Ring of Fire, the province said in a news release Tuesday. “In partnership with Webequie First Nation, our government is building the highway infrastructure needed to improve services and economic opportunities in the north and protect workers by unlocking Ontario’s vast supply of critical minerals,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. Sigfusson Northern Ltd. has been awarded the contract, according to the release. Earlier this year, the province broke ground on the 107-kilometre all-season road that will connect Webequie First Nation to the Ring of Fire. The road network will connect the Ring of Fire to First Nations communities across the region, improving access to services and economic opportunity by providing the community its first all-season road access to the rest of Ontario. “The Webequie Supply Road is a vision led by our community, for our community, and the selection of a construction manager is a step forward in making that vision a reality,” said Chief Lorraine Whitehead. Last year, the province and Webequie First Nation signed a community partnership agreement to accelerate construction of the supply road, which is scheduled to open by November 2030.
