Several ‘newspapers’ in northern Ontario are adapting to the digital age and will no longer produce actual newspaper versions of their news. Postmedia confirmed to CTV News on Oct. 1 that the print editions will cease at the end of the month, with almost a dozen people at the printing presses in North Bay losing their jobs. “As part of Postmedia’s investment in the future of digital news media and its ongoing strategy to evolve how we best deliver our journalism to readers, six local northern Ontario publications will soon transition to a new, next-generation digital platform,” Postmedia said in an email. Weekly print edition of northern Ont. news “This includes the North Bay Nugget, The Sault Star, The Sudbury Star, The Daily Press (Timmins), The Standard (Elliot Lake) and The Mid-North Monitor (Espanola). In addition, the Cochrane Times-Post will cease publication at the end of October.” While individual editions will end, the company said that it will introduce ‘Northern News This Week,’ a new weekly print publication serving subscribers in northern Ontario. “As a result of this transition, the North Bay printing facility that serviced these publications will close on Oct. 31,” the email said. “These changes will impact 11 employees in printing and distribution. There are no editorial roles impacted by these changes.” “Postmedia remains committed to serving the northern Ontario market and these changes will help position our publications for long-term success while ensuring we continue to provide trusted local journalism to our communities,” the statement added.
