Ontario Provincial Police are investigating a single-vehicle crash on Highway 17A in Kenora that claimed the life of a 51-year-old man. On Aug. 1, 2026, shortly before 9 p.m., OPP, fire and emergency medical services responded to a collision on Highway 17A involving a tractor-trailer unit and a pedestrian. “The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital where they were later pronounced deceased,” OPP said in a news release. Police have identified the deceased as Garnet Michaud, 51, of Wabaseemoong Independent Nations, also known as Whitedog First Nation. Investigation ongoing OPP collision reconstructionists are assisting with the investigation, which police said remains active. “While the investigation is ongoing, the OPP does not anticipate any charges resulting from this collision,” said police. Highway 17A has since reopened. Traffic safety remains priority OPP said traffic safety remains a top priority and a key component of the force’s public safety mandate, adding that investigations resulting in the loss of life and serious injuries can be complex to investigate. “As the vast majority of collisions are preventable, thorough and accurate investigations help ensure that motorists who cause these collisions are held accountable for their driving behaviours,” said OPP.
