Ottawa paramedics say a woman in her 40s suffered a medical event prior to crashing her car into the side of a bank in Riverside South. Emergency crews were called to the Scotiabank on Earl Armstrong Road near River Road at around 6 p.m. Thursday for the crash. Ottawa Fire Services public information officer Nick DeFazio said the SUV had been driven through a front window. “The driver had exited the vehicle before firefighters arrived. Firefighters immediately established a medical sector and began assessing and treating the driver for injuries until paramedics arrived,” DeFazio said. “Other firefighters searched the building and surrounding area for any pedestrians who may have been struck. It was confirmed that no one else was involved.” Paramedics told CTV News Ottawa the driver was transported to hospital in stable condition. Ottawa police are investigating. DeFazio said there was no severe structural damage to the building. “Our Structural Collapse Team was dispatched to assess the damage to the building. Due to the collision and the proximity of the gas meter, firefighters shut off the gas supply as a precaution and advised the bank manager,” he said. “Upon arrival, our Structural Collapse Team inspected the building and confirmed that no load-bearing walls or main support posts had been damaged and that the brick lintel remained intact.” With files from CTV News Ottawa’s Adam Beauchemin
