Crews will be working overnight to repair a broken watermain in Toronto’s east end. The incident was reported at around 4:30 a.m. at the intersection of Coxwell and Fairford avenues, near Upper Gerrard Street. Officials say gas and diesel fuel is mixed in with the running water. The risk of ignition is low, police noted. No injuries were reported. “Repairs are complex due to other underground utilities in the area, and work is expected to continue throughout the night. We know this disruption has been difficult for residents and commuters,” William Shea, the city’s director of distribution and collection, wrote in an email to CP24 on Wednesday evening. “Crews are working overnight to complete the repairs and restore water as quickly and safely as possible.” Shea said bottled water has been delivered to impacted properties on Gerrard Street East between Coxwell Avenue and Wembley Drive, where water has been temporarily interrupted. He also noted that eastbound traffic remains reduced to one lane to allow crews to complete their work. “We appreciate the public’s patience as crews work to safely restore service,” Shea said. The city previously said that emergency crews were on-site and working to isolate the break, assess the damage, and complete repairs as quickly and safely as possible. EB traffic impacted, shuttle buses deployed Eastbound traffic remains reduced to one lane and the TTC has replaced the 506 Carlton streetcar with shuttle buses between Main Street Station and Coxwell Avenue at Lower Gerrard Street East. It is unclear when all lanes will reopen to traffic.
