Police in New Westminster, B.C., say a man is facing charges of breaking and entering after he was found hiding inside a restaurant crawlspace. Officers were called to the restaurant around 2:20 a.m. on Sept. 5 after two witnesses reported a possible break-and-enter in progress near 10th and Carnarvon streets. When officers arrived, they found broken glass and spotted a masked man inside the business, according to a Friday news release from the New Westminster Police Department. Additional officers were called in to surround the property. Police deployed a drone and a police dog but were unsuccessful in locating the suspect or convincing him to surrender. Officers eventually entered the restaurant and found the man hiding in “a small crawlspace above the kitchen area,” investigators said. He was arrested and taken into custody without incident, according to police. “This arrest is a testament to the determination and teamwork of the officers involved,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver in a statement. “The suspect went to considerable lengths to avoid detection, but our officers remained committed to conducting a thorough search and bringing the incident to a safe conclusion.” The suspect was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
