Warning: This article contains disturbing details that may be triggering to readers. One of two Essa Twp. men accused of abducting a 15-year-old girl, earlier this month, has been granted bail. Samuel Kelly, 20, was granted bail Thursday afternoon after spending a week behind bars, released to his mother on a $6,000 promise to pay under strict house arrest conditions. Kelly, whom the court heard has issues with alcohol and potentially drugs, was arrested by provincial police who rescued the girl last Wednesday at about 5 a.m. when those in the area said police converged on a home in town. “Officers of the Nottawasaga OPP executed a search warrant on a residence in Essa Township,” said Const. CJ Hietanen with the Nottawasaga OPP. The major crime unit, emergency response and tactics and rescue units also arrested 41-year-old Jason Demerchant, who along with being accused of abducting a person under the age of 16, is charged with luring a minor by means of telecommunication, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, obstruct a peace officer, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. Demerchant remains behind bars. There was not a publication ban imposed at the bail hearing, however a publication ban prevents the identity of the complainant in the case from being released. The court heard Kelly allegedly helped to hold the girl captive and concealed her location, knowing police were looking for her. The court heard the girl was provided alcohol and marijuana. Police said the investigation continues but will not reveal whether other suspects are involved or accused at this time. “No further information is being provided to protect the integrity of the case as well as the identity of the victim,” said Const. CJ Hietanen. Kelly is scheduled to return to a virtual Bradford courtroom next month. Demerchant returns to court by video from jail on Friday. The allegations against them have not been tested in court.
