Two years after a man was swept away in the North Thompson River, Kamloops RCMP say they have recovered his remains. Mounties say they hope the discovery of Stan Cappis will help bring some closure to his family and friends. The 50-year-old father from Red Deer was reportedly at the river with a friend on July 12, 2024, when they jumped in to rescue two youth, who had stepped off a sandbar into the fast-moving water. The friend and two young people were able to get safely to shore, but Cappis was carried away by the current, last seen rounding the bend of the river. A large search effort immediately began, with police dogs, fire fighters and civilians searching the water and surrounding banks, but he was not found. In a news release Thursday, Kamloops RCMP revealed that on July 16, human remains were positively identified as belonging to Cappis. “In consultation with family members we are releasing his name to the public given the high level of engagement from the community in their continued efforts to look for Stan,” said Cpl. Dana Napier, who offered condolences to his loved ones.
